Noncombustible option

Fiber-Cement Panels

Fiber-cement products, including appropriately supported Hardie-type panels, can provide a clean painted appearance with substantially less combustibility than traditional wood fencing.

Open wire option

Hogwire and Deer Wire

Wire fencing reduces the amount of solid combustible material and can preserve visibility. Wood posts and frames remain combustible, so placement, maintenance and the section nearest the home still require careful planning.

Real wood option

Real Wood. Made Safer.

SaferWood is lumber that has been pressure treated with Chemco's Thermex-FR fire-retardant system and kiln-dried after treatment. The treatment is evaluated for exterior fire-retardant-treated wood uses, including ignition-resistant applications where the applicable building code and local authority permit it.

SaferWood is evaluated under ICC-ES report ESR-1159 and is represented by the manufacturer as compliant with applicable International Building Code, International Residential Code and International Wildland-Urban Interface Code provisions when the specified product, design and installation requirements are followed.

Ignition-Resistant Performance

The treated wood is tested for surface-burning performance and weathered exterior use. Each project must use properly labeled material suitable for the intended application.

Natural Wood Appearance

SaferWood provides a real-wood alternative for homeowners who prefer the warmth and appearance of wood rather than an all-metal or fiber-cement fence.

Manufacturer Warranty

Eligible products may include a limited lifetime warranty. Coverage, registration, permitted applications and exclusions are governed by the manufacturer's current written warranty.

Available Wood Species and Profiles

Just Fences can source SaferWood through participating lumber suppliers. Species, grades, dimensions and lead times vary by distributor and project. Common evaluated or marketed species include:

  • Southern Yellow Pine
  • Douglas Fir
  • Western Red Cedar
  • White Spruce
  • Western Hem-Fir
  • Selected Hemlock Products

Just Fences will confirm the exact species, grade, treatment label, dimensions, finishing requirements and availability before ordering the material for your project.

Important material distinction: Fire-retardant-treated wood is not the same as a noncombustible material. Rules for fencing attached to a home or located within Zone 0 may favor or require metal, fiber cement or another noncombustible option. Product acceptance depends on the specific assembly, location, adopted code and the authority having jurisdiction. Confirm requirements with your local fire and building officials before selecting materials.

The California Fire Safe Council's 2025 Vendor List includes SaferWood by Chemco under fire-resistant building materials. The publication expressly states that inclusion is not an endorsement or certification, so property owners should review technical documents and perform their own due diligence.
